About Us
The Compost Toilet company was set up in 2021 by myself, Sarah Tandy.
I started TCTC because as a farmer and vegetable grower I realised how much compost farming needs and how starved our soils are whilst we flush valuable nutrients away every day. Sewage ends up being pumped into our waterways, polluting our oceans, rivers and ultimately our drinking water, while our farmland depends on expensive, chemical fertilisers which themselves contaminate our water courses and ecosystems.
Each project we deliver helps people live more lightly, save resources, and rethink what “waste” really means. My mission is to make regenerative sanitation as normal as recycling. Because real change sometimes starts with a loo.
Our company tackles two urgent environmental issues: sewage pollution and soil degradation. Instead of polluting, our process recycles human waste into safe, nutrient-rich compost that restores soil health and reduces reliance on chemical fertilisers. We operate from a small farm in Leicestershire and compost using our own composters designed and built by ourselves specifically for the purpose.
By closing the loop between people and the land, we’re not just managing waste — we’re rebuilding a natural cycle that supports cleaner water, healthier soils, fairer work, and a more resilient food system for all.
A picture of us at the first gathering we supplied toilets for. It was a wonderful place in Derbyshire with around 150 of the loveliest people.
